5.2 – Levels of Thinking

HIGH LEVEL THINKING
Generating lines, shapes of increasing complexity and testing against experience.

EYE AND BRAIN
The painter invents coloured shapes which may or may not match the image in the viewfinder.

LOW LEVEL THINKING
Tracing a flat pattern.

TRACING
The painter, viewing through a perspective frame, traces parts of the image-in-the-viewfinder which he considers to be significant.
ZERO LEVEL THINKING
A mechanical device records a flat pattern.

AUTOMATIC
The photographer presses a button so that a recording device copies what appears in the viewfinder – matching it perfectly (within technical limitations).
